About Us

Our Past
St. Winifred's is a voluntary aided Roman Catholic primary school attached to the Parish of St. Winifred's, Heaton Mersey, Stockport, in the Diocese of Salford.
The school was opened in 1936 in a mill owner's mansion. In 1963 a new school was built in the grounds and the mansion demolished.
Our Present
St. Winifred's is a two form entry school for Infant and Junior aged children. It has a large main building for Junior classes and one Infant class, an all purpose hall, library, kitchen and administration section. There is a separate Infant building and two further mobile classrooms for Juniors.
There are currently 361 pupils on roll.
Mission Statement
St. Winifred's School, through a balanced curriculum, endeavours to nurture and teach the Roman Catholic Faith by creating an environment where the Gospel values of love, peace, truth and justice are demonstrated and in which the whole child can attain its full potential, in partnership with the family, parish and the wider community.
This means we aim to meet our pupils' needs in the light of the Gospels. We firmly believe it is our religious dimension which makes St. Winifred's School distinctive. It is found in the atmosphere of the school:
- in the quality of the relationships based on care and respect;
- in the belief that all knowledge and learning comes from trust;
- in the delivery of the curriculum which is based on these two.
Overall Aims and Objectives
- We exist as a voluntary aided Catholic School and aim to develop the full human potential of each individual in the light of Christ and the Gospels.
- To foster in the children a love and knowledge of the Catholic faith.
- To provide a consistently secure and happy atmosphere within which true learning can take place.
- To enable individuals to maximise their full potential morally, physically, socially and intellectually.
- To enable individual children to learn how to look after themselves and to develop self confidence.
- To enable individuals to understand, appreciate and respect the feelings and interests of others.
- To enable individuals to acquire and develop the basic skills necessary to take their place in modern society.
- To enable individuals to appreciate those interests and activites which make life full, enjoyable and rewarding.
- To enable individuals to explore, learn about and discover their own immediate environment and that of the wider society.
- To enable individuals to formulate and develop their own idea and responses and to adopt a logical and critical attitude which will protect them from exploitation in its many forms.
Admissions Policy
Admissions to the school will be made by the Governing Body in accordance with stated parental preference subject to the following set of admissions criteria. These criteria form a priority order when there are more applications for admission than the school has places available:
It is a requirement that a child’s Baptism be verified prior to admission.
Priority will be given to all Looked After Children who are Roman Catholic over all other Roman Catholic applicants. Then priority will be given to all Looked After Children who are not Roman Catholic over all other applications who are not Roman Catholic.
CRITERIA 1. Looked After Children who are Roman Catholic.
2. Looked After Children non Roman Catholic.
3. Baptised Catholics living in the catchment area.
4. Other Roman Catholic pupils who have a brother or sister at the school.
5. Other Roman Catholic pupils.
6. Other pupils.
If any of the above categories are over subscribed, a place will be allocated according to ease of access and proximity, taking into account the availability of alternative Roman Catholic and County Schools.
The Governing Body reserve the right to admit children with proven and exceptional medical or social needs where admission to the school might best help to satisfy those exceptional needs.
Parents who are refused admission for their child have a right to appeal. The appeals procedure is operated by the Local Authority (LA), on behalf of the governors and in conjunction with Diocesan nominees.
Parents in these circumstances should contact the Secretary to the Independent Appeal Panel (tel. No. 0161 474 3203) for an appeal request form and advice about the appeal process.
Our current admission limit is 60.
